The napB gene encodes a dihaem cytochrome c, the small subunit of a heterodimeric periplasmic nitrate reductase. The NapB protein is essential in transferring electrons to the large catalytic subunit NapA, which subsequently reduces nitrate to nitrite. [ (PUBMED:11389694) ].
