| Description: | Peptide synthetases are involved in the non-ribosomal synthesis of peptide antibiotics. Next to the operons encoding these enzymes, in almost all cases, are genes that encode proteins that have similarity to the type II fatty acid thioesterases of vertebrates. There are also modules within the peptide synthetases that also share this similarity. With respect to antibiotic production, thioesterases are required for the addition of the last amino acid to the peptide antibiotic, thereby forming a cyclic antibiotic. Thioesterases (non-integrated) have molecular masses of 25-29 kDa. |

KEGG pathways involving proteins which contain this domain
This information is based on the mapping of SMART genomic protein database to KEGG orthologous groups. Percentages are related to the number of proteins containing a PKS_TE domain which could be assigned to a KEGG orthologous group, and not all proteins containing PKS_TE domains. Please note that proteins can be included in multiple pathways, ie. the numbers below will not add to 100%.
